A hickey, also known as a love bite, refers to a bruise that’s caused by the kissing, sucking or biting of soft skin, usually on one’s neck. The neck is a common erogenous zone, so it’s prone to soft bites that may occur when partners make out. Hickies may be harmless and pose no health risks, but the issue with love bites is that they can be a little embarrassing in a social, professional or family setting. That said, there are many ways on how to get rid of love bites fast.
Wrap a paper towel around an ice cube. Press firmly and gently move the ice cube around the hickey, repeat as many times as you can, then leave the ice cube on the love bite for at least 15-20 minutes. If you have no ice, don’t worry. Put a teaspoon in a freezer and leave it there for 10-15 minutes until it’s very cold. Then rub the spoon against your love bite. This should get rid of your hickey immediately.
This method requires heat which increases the flow of blood in the desired area and gets rid of the hickey. The hot method is perfect for a hickey that’s only a few hours old.
Place a bottle with hot water on your bruise. Leave it there for at least 10 minutes.
You can also soak a towel in hot water, and later place it on your bruise.
A natural moisturizer, aloe vera will help decrease the sensitivity of the love bite. In addition, its soothing and anti-inflammatory properties will help heal the burst capillaries beneath your skin faster.
Massage some fresh aloe vera gel into the hickey. Do this 2-3 times daily.
If you don’t have fresh aloe vera, you can apply an aloe vera-based lotion or cream on the affected area 2-3 times daily for a couple of days.
Banana peelings have the ability to soothe. Put the peelings on the love bite with the inner part facing down. Leave them on for at least 10 minutes before removing them. Do this at least thrice a day for optimal results. You can use banana peelings from your kitchen.
Peppermint oil or mint-based lotions may help boost blood circulation. If you do not have these things, then mint toothpaste may also help. Apply peppermint oil, or mint oil, or mint toothpaste to the area around your hickey. This will start to tingle. After the tingling has stopped, wipe away the toothpaste using a damp, warm towel.
A word of warning: You can try this treatment many times, but don’t overdo it as it may lead to local irritation of skin. This remedy works a treat to boost circulation and remove the clot.
Oranges are full of vitamin C, a vital nutrient required by your body for skin repairs. Additionally, vitamin C contains healing properties that help cure a hickey fast. If you have a hickey, drink some fresh orange juice for optimal results. If you don’t have oranges, take 500 mg of vitamin C thrice a day for 7 days to help repair your collagen.
Cocoa butter is effective for healing bruises such as hickies. It’s a great moisturizer and helps new skin tissues to grow. Use a warm compress on your hickey. While the love bite is warm, apply cocoa butter. Gently massage the area for a couple of minutes. This will thin the blood clot to boost circulation. Repeat this several times per day. If you don’t have cocoa butter, you can use almond oil or olive oil.
Massaging a love bite can help break down the blood clot as well as increase circulation around the area, helping to remove the hickey.
Apply a heating pad or warm towel to the area around the hickey.
When the area of the bruise is warm, firmly massage it with your fingers.
In a round motion, rub the hickey from the inside outwards, breaking down the blood clot as well as pushing blood away from the middle of the hickey.
Using your fingers, apply pressure on the middle of the love bite. Slowly push your fingers outwards towards the surrounding area. Repeat this several times daily.
This is another blood-thinning agent you can try. Some studies have proven that fish oil contains omega-3 fatty acids which help reduce swelling and inflammation. Don’t take excess fish oil. One gram a day is fine, according to the American Heart Association.
Vitamin K prevents blood clots (coagulation) and thus can be applied to treat bruises. Vitamin K helps the body reabsorb collected blood and accelerate the healing process.
Apply a cream or lotion high in this vitamin to the bruise 2-3 times per day until the hickey has disappeared.
Eat more foods rich in vitamin K such as brown rice, soybean oil, broccoli, and spinach for 2-3 days.
You can also use vitamin K supplements to promote the healing process.
Rubbing alcohol is the best way to remove hickies that are only a few hours old. This method has soothing, cooling and disinfectant properties that can remove hickies quickly.
Apply some alcohol to the hickey with a cotton ball.
Gently rub the area for 5-10 minutes. This will help ease any discomfort.
Alcohol can make your skin dry, so apply moisturizing lotion to the area once you’re done.
Repeat this several times daily for a couple of days.
Just like any other bruise, medication can also help heal a hickey. However, medication helps in pain relief and changing the composition of blood to speed up healing. For example:
Aspirin is a popular painkiller. However, it’s also an excellent blood thinner that helps remove a hickey. It’s best used within 24 hours of getting the love bite. As an anti-coagulant, it thins the clotting blood and easily reabsorbs it back into the blood.
Using vitamin E supplements soon after getting a love bite will help repair broken capillaries. Also, vitamin E-rich foods can help in tissue repair.
Vitamin K is a great coagulant. When used immediately, it helps reabsorb the blood clot back into the bloodstream. This will help remove the hickey quickly.
Generally, any medication taken to help get rid of hickies shouldn’t be abused and you should watch out for any allergic reactions.
To sum up, just remember to take care the next time you’re making out with your partner, especially if you’re going somewhere the following day. However, if you can’t help having fun with your significant other, and getting hickies, try some of the above ways to cure your problem.
